What is a raw dog food diet?

A raw dog food diet is all about feeding your pup natural, raw foods—the way they once would've eaten in the wild!

You might hear it called the BARF diet, which stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (or sometimes Bones and Raw Food).

What does it include?

It’s a mix of wholesome, fresh ingredients like:

  • 🥩 Raw meat (beef, chicken, turkey, lamb—you name it!)
  • 🍖 Raw, edible bones (like chicken wings or necks— but not the cooked ones!)
  • 🫀 Organ meats (like liver, kidney, or heart)
  • 🥦 Optional fruits & veggies (great for packing in those essential nutrients)

Think of it as a way to give your dog a meal that’s closer to nature— no nasties (grains and fillers), all flavour!

What does complete raw dog food mean?

🐶 When you see the word "complete" on a raw dog food label, it means the food is nutritionally balanced and packed with everything your furry friend needs to stay happy and healthy - no need for any added extras!

In other words, it’s not just raw meat tossed into a bowl. It includes the right amounts of protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients to meet your dog’s daily needs.

How do I feed raw frozen meals?

Feeding raw frozen food might sound a little faffy at first, but it’s actually super easy—and your pup is going to love it! Here's some simple steps to get you started:

❄️ Thaw it gently

Take a tray out of the freezer and pop it in the fridge to thaw—that way it stays fresh and safe.

💡 In a rush? You can put it in some cool water to speed things up!

🐾 Store it smart

If you're not feeding the whole tray, once thawed, pop the lid back on and keep it in the fridge.

Use it within 4 days, and avoid refreezing once it’s thawed—it’s best fresh!

🍽️ Mealtime magic

Portion up and serve cold or at room temp - depending on your pups preference!

No need to cook it—raw is the way to go, especially because cooked bones can be unsafe.

⚖️ Portion it right

A good rule of thumb for getting your portions bob on: 2–3% of your dog’s ideal body weight in raw food daily—depending on their activity level.

(E.g. A 10kg dog would get around 200g to 300g of food per day.)

Split into two meals if your dog likes to have breakfast and dinner.

🧼 Don't forget the clean up

After feeding, wash your hands, the bowl, and any surfaces the food touched—just like you would with raw meat for your own meals.

🥣 Tip: Stainless steel bowls are your friend—easy to clean and bacteria-resistant
